Nature Loving Japan loves to contradict itself.  The massive clear-cutting of its forests not too long after the Black Ships arrived is an environmental catastrophe, the effects of which are still not known.  Biodiversity destroyed in the name of some stupid idea.  Just because you’re hiking through a forest doesn’t mean it’s natural.  A newly rich Vietnamese once told an Amerikan friend of yours truly “When you people see a forest, you think ‘preservation’.  We think ‘That’d look nice as concrete.'”
